Multilingual Learner

Multilingual Learners register for English courses based on their English proficiency level and acquisition of academic language. ML students are encouraged to take one full credit of English each semester in order to accelerate English acquisition. At the high school level, a student can remain in ML classes for up to four years as it can take as many as 7-10 years to become English proficient.

This course is specifically designed for non-native English speakers who are newcomers to the country.  The emphasis of this course is to develop student writing skills by focusing on sentence structure, paragraph structure, transitions, and grammar through the writing process.  The reading component addresses individual needs through high-interest literature and explicit instruction in reading, writing, and vocabulary development.  This course will require an additional 10-15 mods of instruction to be assigned by the teacher depending on student needs.

This course is designed for students with an English proficiency of 4 who, with additional ML support and modification, would be successful in mainstreamed English classes. This course combines the study of literature, writing, and speaking through integrated thematic units covering short stories, the novel and drama. Students will be taught the writing process with an emphasis on planning and organization. All units will include a language study.

This course is designed for ML students in 9^th – 12^th grade who would benefit from extra support in their content area classes. This course aims to assist students in reading comprehension and assignment support revolving around their course selections. It meets for 6 mods per week and is Pass or Fail.

This course is designed to prepare students with literacy expertise. A variety of literature and literary response is taught. The course teaches writing forms such as narrative, comparison/contrast, expository and persuasive essays. The course is appropriate for students who have a Lexile between 600-750 and an EP of 2 or 3.

This is a one-year course for ML students.  It is an integrated science approach to developing basic skills, knowledge and appreciation of science.  The themes studied involve the natural phenomena that affect an individual on a day-to-day basis.  Most of the instruction is laboratory based and includes investigations from all five basic disciplines of science (biology, chemistry, earth science, environmental science and physics).  Scientific skills, problem solving, and critical thinking skills are highly emphasized.  This course builds a strong foundation for students as they prepare to move through upper-level science classes in the future.

This is a one-year course for ML students.  It is an integrated science approach to developing advanced skills, critical thinking knowledge and appreciation of science.  The theme is directed toward those concerns that our culture must face at the present time and in the future.  Most of the instruction is laboratory based and includes investigations from all four basic disciplines of science (Biology, Chemistry, Earth Science & Physics).  The nature of the scientific endeavor and the relationship of science and technology to society are emphasized. Language and key concepts are reinforced.

ML Government is an alternating two-year course open to grades 9-12. This course will explore how the U.S. Government is structured and functions. It will also cover the historical background of how the U.S. Government was formed and how it has changed over time.

Students will be approved for this course at the discretion of the course instructor.

This resource is designed for recently exited students in grades 9-12 that would benefit from a small amount of support. The student meets with an educator in the ML Resource center to discuss and get help with missing assignments and coursework.

This course is specifically designed for ML students who would benefit from extra support in English 9. This course aims to assist students in successful completion of the course and prepare them for English 10.  Class will meet for 6 mods per week and is graded Pass or Fail.

This course is specifically designed for ML students who would benefit from extra support in U.S. History I. This course aims to assist students in successful completion of the course and prepare them for U.S. History II.  Class will meet for 6 mods per week and is graded Pass or Fail.

This course is specifically designed for ML students who would benefit from extra support in Science 9.  This course aims to assist students in successful completion of the course and prepare them for Science 10.  Class will meet for 6 mods per week and is graded Pass or Fail.

This course is specifically designed for ML students who would benefit from extra support in English 10.  This course aims to assist students in successful completion of the course and prepare them for their future English electives.  Class will meet for 6 mods per week and is graded Pass or Fail.

This course is specifically designed for ML students who would benefit from extra support in U.S. History II.  This course aims to assist students in successful completion of the course and prepare them for their future History electives.  Class will meet for 6 mods per week and is graded Pass or Fail.

This course is specifically designed for ML students who would benefit from extra support in Science 10.  This course aims to assist students in successful completion of the course and prepare them for their future Science electives.  Class will meet for 6 mods per week and is graded Pass or Fail.
