The American Association of Teachers of French (AATF) has conferred its award of Exemplary Program on Wausau West High School in April 2018. This prestigious award recognizes the outstanding quality of the French program. Wausau West is one of only five schools and universities in the nation to receive this award, now in its fourth year. The program offers advanced courses, including Advanced Placement (AP), and dual credit with the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay. The program also uses innovative and creative teaching methods, gives standards-based assessments, and offers numerous cultural activities beyond the classroom. Wausau West participates in the AATF National French Contest, Concours Oral, and inducts students into the French National Honor Society. French teacher Kara Torkelson shows excellent preparation, steady commitment to professional development, and enthusiastic dedication to her work. Graduates have continued to use French and the skills they acquired in further study and in careers such as teaching, business, and government.

The American Association of Teachers of French, founded in 1927, is the largest association of French teachers in the world, with nearly 9,000 members. It offers enrichment and support to teachers and is pleased to recognize high achievement in teachers and students.
