West High School Key Club members volunteered their time to watch children as their parents participated in the LENA Start program classes through the Marathon County Public Library. Key Club volunteers, including those pictured (From left to right:  Freshman Janifer Xiong, Freshman Kao Yang, Sophomore Tia Rodriguez), watched children at the Barrington Head Start Center and at the Marathon County Public Library each week from September to December making it possible for parents to learn strategies to help build babies' brains. Key Club volunteers were thanked and recognized at the LENA Start graduation ceremonies held in December. The Key Club advisor is Monica Borreson.

LENA stands for Learning ENvironment Analysis. The LENA system measures the early language environment of children ages birth to 32 months. Using a "talk pedometer" that children wear in a comfortable, child-safe vest, LENA technology tracks conversations with children including the number of words they are exposed to during one-week intervals. Parents also participate in classes led by trained LENA staff to help them improve interactions with their child.
